I must confess and testify that I am grateful to be raised in a family where there was a plethora of music to embrace and enjoy. One of my memories consists of hearing my uncle Anthony, who has traveled the world a few times over, return home to visit.
Well versed in different cultures and languages, Anthony always brought an eclectic mix of music in his backpack whenever he returned home. One particular artist was that of Sir Thelonious Monk who to this day is respected by musicians and singers like no other.
Born in North Carolina, Sir. Monk traveled with a gumbo of musicians and preachers who played a major part in his formative years. He would go on to record classics such as Round Midnight, Blue Monk and Straight No Chaser just to name a few.
Even as he battled mental illness in his final years, Thelonious would play like no other and who we feel can not be touched by any musician. Check out a few performances from this musical Icon and see what we mean when we say he was certainly before his time.
