LIRM Lifestyle Spot ~ My Momma Taught Me To Love Cabinets

As I am up on this early morning I find that many things pique my inspiration and cause a flood of ideas to flow within my mind.

Being a blogger of a certain age, I often have vivid memories of my precocious childhood and the harmonious moments as I grew into adulthood.  From the ever popular holiday seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas to the nail biting first day of Junior High School, my mind is loaded with the highs and lows of coming of age.

One of my most vivid memories is that of a eight year old tyke who was often sitting at the counter tops as my aunts, uncles and grandparents would prepare various holiday dinners. I can vividly remember the smell of spices and flavorings such as vanilla, cumin, all Spice and much more.

As I waited to handle the scraps, spoons and utensils that were laced with the remnants of the above mentioned spices, I can remember being enamoured with the cabinetry of the kitchen. Depending on which home we celebrated seasons and celebrations I could often be seen looking at the cabinet handles, doors and decorations.

My grandparents always had nice cabinets and though I don't think they really paid attention to the details, I found myself looking closely. One particular home that they purchased had super modern cabinets and I am not sure they ever realized it.

My fashionable uncle Donald was one who was always the first to introduce the family to the finer things of life and when he purchased his first home on the Upper South Side of Houston, I realized and experienced the glamour of a kitchen.

His home was not only immaculate but his kitchen was one for the record books. From the design of the island to the smooth texture of his custom painted walls, my uncle was the boss man when it came to style. As he and his wife showcased their home to his proud parents and friends, this nephew was standing in his spacious kitchen looking at the cabinetry he had installed.

The door handles were just as amazing as he was and though he never confessed to picking out the details of door handles and the like, I knew he did it all. As I grew into a teenager and my mom brought her first home, I was more involved in the process of eliminating some bad cabinet choices.

She purchased her home from two hippies who had a unique collection of stuffed birds, dated paneling and hideous carpet throughout the home. Knowing my mom like I know her, I knew once she signed those papers and received the keys, this blogger would be busy.

From the priming of walls, taking up old dated carpet, all the way to replacing the cabinetry throughout, me and my mother turned that house of horror into a showplace for all her family, friends and some foes to see.  Yearly she would have me on a ladder clearing up spots in the ceilings, on my knees cleaning bad spots on the floor and yes you guessed it, updating the cabinets in the kitchen.

Her love for seasons is something for the record books as she can often be seen at local craft stores looking for unique doorknobs, glass and much more. Even as she faced cancer and a bone marrow transplant, she kept me busy honing my skills regarding upgrading cabinetry which has led to me having a love for the upgrading of it all.

She is now cancer free and her mind is yet loaded with amazing skills that I find myself often calling and asking her about. Check out some amazing selections of cool cabinets and see if you don't have the same reaction that this blogger did.

Good Stuff!
