Hand of God
Amazon's Hand Of God Season 2 Premiere Date Confirmed; Why Canceling #HANDOFGOD is a BIG BIG Mistake for Amazon.
The fans bombarded series creator Ben Watkins, who is also an impressive actor in his own right, social media timeline like bee's to honey asking for the deets concerning their fav show - we know his phone STAYED buzzing. Now keep in mind that this is somewhat of an update to all things Hand of God and how much we stan for this show.
But back to the matter at hand- can you believe - Amazon had the NERVE to cancel this powerful show to make room for some other show that probably won't live up to it's hype. Watkins took to his instagram to share the damn news and it was perfectly written, just like his series.
REALLY AMAZON????????????????????????????????????????
The show is a refreshing break from the normal - we don't take too many chances with characters so we can keep our secured spot in tv land - television landscaped that we see daily, weekly and monthly. Watkins managed to bring a gritty yet polished yet dramatic glossy-serial-crime-murder-mystery soap to the fledging Amazon and before long things began to take off for this little show that could.
From where we sit the show pushes the damn envelope that will cause even the most judgmental individual to somewhat question their moral compass. The writers are tackling racial issues, murder, mayhem, love, deceit, greed and loads more but do it in a subtle yet in your face way that causes you to think but yet not be too concerned with caucasian judge Pernell's affair with african american call girl Tessie.
REALLY AMAZON????????
What we love about this show and the writing is that they aren't showing us what they THINK the viewers want to see, they are simply giving us good twists and turns mixed with stellar acting across the board. Yeah yeah, you may see various outlets reporting that the series is not their cup of cutting edge tv but we are just gonna chop that up to those individuals being fatigued.
Here's 5 reasons why we love the show:
PERNELL & CRYSTAL HARRIS:
We'd like to call this couple, played to perfection by Ron Perlman and Dana Delaney, the storyline anchors of the show. The couple is dealing with their son's attempting suicide which has sent him into a coma with no signs of recovering or will he recover? Miracles do happen!!!
REALLY AMAZON???????
Here we have a line drawn in the sand that allows the viewer to make up their minds when it comes to the visions and voices that the judge may or may not be having. Is he hearing from God/higher power that is pushing him to stumble across the truth about his baby boy?? Is he losing touch with reality due to his son's illness or maybe someone close to him is gas lighting him to gain control of various opportunities within the city hall.

Also serving as a life choice foe is his daughter in law Jocelyn (Alona Tal) who is hell bent on pulling the plug on her husband. Tal plays Jocelyn with a perfect mixture of damsel in distress, a machinating daughter in law who seems to want to move on and a heartbroken newlywed who can't seem to heal from a violent crime in her home.

What we love about Crystal is that she has a way of keeping tabs on her wayward husband *insert Erykan Badu's character April* and will call him on his shit. Towards the end of the finale we see that tables switch between the couple with Pernell taking care of his embattled wife.
REALLY AMAZON??????????????
KD:
Garret Dillahunt is superb with his portrayal of a quiet killer who actually has a soft spot for a certain spiritual damsel in distress. KD is a killer that you kind of root for even though you know he is destined for hell due to his brutal show of affection and protection of those around him. Dillahunt takes the viewer to the edge and then slightly over it as we are given glimpses of what makes the contract killer tick. Can we confess that we feel sorry for this cold and calculating killer? The writers have managed to give this torn murderer the love/hate gift of sorrow and we kind of like it.

What we notice is that KD seems to want to do the right thing, certainly needs meds and is constantly being pulled back into murderous madness via Pernell. Dillahunt plays each scene with rage and mental anguish with a character that seems to truly want to live as normal as possible but keeps being called to handle business all in the name of something spiritually higher than he.
REALLY AMAZON??????????
MAYOR ROBERT BOSTON:
Who is more cooler than Andre Royo???? The mayor thats who, excellently played by Royo. He brings the center of the show a bit from where we sit but is also determined to be better than those that have come before him, including his father and grandfather. His son Asa (Cleavon McClendon) is comedic gold as ia kind of right by his side moral compass which always includes some heavy/light conflict.

What we don't think many pay attention to is how he had the keen sense to do what it takes to get Pernell right where he needs him to be and usually implores Crystal to drive that home. Mayor Boston has layers to his character and kind of seems to want to please everybody around him but there is a slight sadness to him as well as something sinister. He will do what it takes to gain more power in the city so Pernell may want to watch is back.

TESSIE GRAHAM:
Tessie's first appearance will trick you into thinking that she's just for Pernell's desserts but there's so much more to this flawed character. Emayatzy Corinealdi is perfect as a high class call girl with a heart of gold who could double for a state's attorney but she has her own demons to fight outside of her dealings with her well connected judge of a lover.

Her mother (Vanessa Bell Calloway) is that morally perfect parent who has no desire to be involved in any of her daughters dirty dealings and is working hard to keep Tessie's younger brother away as well. As the show proceeds we find more cracks in call girl's well kept life and secrets emerged which causes the viewer to root for her to win. Tessie is the character to root for because something about her screams survivor. By the end of the season situations emerge that changes the dynamics of her personal and professional life.
REALLY AMAZON??????????????????????
REV. PAUL CURTIS & ALICIA:
This couple (Julian Morris & Elizabeth McLaughlin) are the leaders of Hand Of God Ministries, the progressive church that Pernell is connected to as well as various characters on the canvas. As the series progresses we find that the couple is totally out of control as leaders which is actually the issue in many real life churches today. Paul's struggle is kind of ripped from the headlines of many real life spiritual guru's/pastors who are closeted drug addicts. Alicia, who has the voice of an angel is kind of like his clean up woman but she's also harboring some secrets of her own that is sure to change the flow of their ministry work/hustle.

One thing that we notice is that Alicia and KD have some chemistry that is kind of like smoldering and is sure to build more next season. It reminds us of Tony Geary's Luke Spencer to Genie Francis's Laura Webber on General Hospital in the early 80's. We smell a serious love triangle forming between Paul, Alicia and murderous KD next season.
Now hopefully the big guys up at the Amazon office in the sky will somehow see this blog post and realize how BIG of a mistake it is to cancel this promising masterpiece. Ben Watkins is right up there with the Shonda Rhimes, Pete Nowalks, Courtney Kemp Agboah's and the like who are putting in the work to bring raw and cutting edge stories in a reality show age that sometimes pushes even the most faithful viewer to cancel their cable subscriptions during the off seasons.

The show actually deserves a more toned network such as perhaps a Starz, HBO or even FX and we say that because it simply deserved a chance to shine and grow. Some of the most prolific shows in primetime didnt take off right away - DALLAS, KNOTS LANDING, DYNASTY - all had to find their footing along the way but wait - their networks took the chance and stuck it out.
REALLY AMAZON?????????????????????????????
Now let's be clear here - Amazon is not the cheapest choice in the streaming lane but we gave it a chance based off this cool show. Something tells us that Watkins, who is also VERY involved in movements that are near and dear to him, is gonna go out with a bang at the end of season 2. We also can't help but wonder if his support of various movements may have caused someone to get a bit slighted when it came to this show - INSERT SIDE EYE AND PAUSE --- But anyways!!!
We are set to ride to the end with the cast and go out with a bang on social media in 2017 and we know Watkins will be back with a fresh new show that will most definitely cause us to support it to the fullest.
OH ONE MORE THING:::::::

Totally agree. Hand of God was so inventive and original and compelling! The casting for each and every character is beyond perfect. The story line always surprises. This is in my top 3 shows of all time, and I will greatly miss it when it's gone.
