Spirited educator and innovator Marva Collins is being remembered this week as news was released that she passed away from natural causes.
Mrs. Collins, who was portrayed by Cicely Tyson in a made for television movie in the eighties, name is legendary in the african american community due to her diligence to educate those some would deem unteachable.
The Alabama born and bred educator turned the city of Chicago on its head with her teaching techniques such as teaching out of her home. Those after her embraced the same techniques in classrooms around the country. Ms. Collins is important to the education culture because before her appearance many teachers were simply not caring which pushed her to form her own school the West Side Preparatory School in Chicago, Ill.
Rest Well Mrs. Collins
