Tameka Goodman- SOULFUL ROLE MODEL
Picture yourself driving to a church service in a remote part of the city. As you arrive to the church edifice, you are asking God to prepare you for the service and to give you inspiration.
As you get closer, you hear this powerful voice and you hear the praises of the congregation. A Voice that sounds like a mature Twenty Year old is reaching its full pitch and potential. As you scan the choir stand, you find that the voice is coming from a 14 year old teenager.
That has been the case with Tameka Goodman, Born and raised in Shreveport LA, She has established herself as the most well known performer in North Louisiana. Tameka comes from a family of trained singers and performers. Her grandfather, Mother and Cousins are all talented singers and performers.
“I grew up singing with my family. You could always catch us harmonizing with one another”, exclaims Tameka. Her family has always been motivation for her. As a teen Tameka performed and travel exclusively throughout the United States.
As she states,” I absouletly apprecitate my mother for trusting me allowing me to go and travel and sing. But I had to be back for school- That was the CATCH.” Tameka eventually attended cosmetology school and became a Hair Stylist but the passion for singing and performing would always be there.
She would go on to make the transition from Gospel to Secular Music. It was during this time that she received flack from those who couldn’t grasp the idea of the granddaughter of a Pastor singing that other type of music. “I never really struggled with it. I knew that God had given me a gift and I had the passion,” states Tameka.
Tameka forged ahead and left the naysayers behind and began to open for regional concerts and singing background for many successful artists.
She has shared the stage with the likes of Tom Joyner, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Faith Evans, Gerald LeVert, KC & JoJo, Tyrese, Lyfe Jennings, Bruce Bruce, Steve Harvey, Lakeside, Legendary Blues artist Shirley Brown, Erykah Badu and Ricky Smiley to name a few. She has been highlighted in several casinos and hundreds of colleges and major civic festivals and events throughout the United States.
After years and years of being in the studio, she began to prep her debut release “Her Lovebox”. The project would go on to showcase the various sides to this tremendously talented artist and arranger.
The leading single "Talk No More" describes a woman's interest in her man's life but he fails to talk to her about what's going on in his mind.
“Many relationships fall apart because of poor communication. This song simply suggests if you don’t have time to talk to me, we don't need to be in this relationship,” she says.
The song is one that many women can easily understand has lifted the age level of radio call-ins and request. Goodman, in her early 30's, has never felt age matters when it comes to soul music. "I'm not trying to compete with the teen artists I'm an adult and I make music for adults in relationships", she says.
However she's seen a huge number of teens supporting her in concerts and events. "It's beautiful to be understood and accepted by all people in all age groups", she states. Tameka continued to travel and assembled a band of musicians who believed in Real music and continued to establish herself as a seasoned performer.
"I think mature music lovers can relate to my music because everything I sing about is real and I'm honest in my delivery and people respect that", she says.
Already she's being compared to Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Betty Wright, and Chaka Khan. Tameka exclaims, "It is great to be compared to great artist but people create categories. All of those artists are totally different and they all have made amazing contributions to the music industry".
When you ask Tameka what type of legacy would she like to leave this world she states, “I hope to leave an impact in the music industry just as strong and successful as my idols have done for myself.”
Tameka Goodman has been singing from an honest place all of her life and one can only expect more Honest Music from this great artist. That makes her a ROLE MODEL for others who feel the desire to pursue their dreams.
